Cannabis is illegal in Ethiopia.
The production of cannabis is relatively high and smuggling to neighbouring countries is common. Most of the production is concentrated in rural areas, mainly around the town of Shashamane, where a small community of Rastafarians reside.
While much of what is produced is consumed locally, improvements to the Ethiopia-Kenya highway seem to have resulted in an increase in cannabis smuggling into Kenya, with several large-scale seizures reported in recent years.
There is no violence associated with the cannabis trade in the country.
