Is cannabis legal in Mauritius?

Cannabis is illegal in Mauritius.

In November 2022 Mauritius legalised the dispensing of cannabis or its extracts to people suffering from a range of medical conditions.

The Dangerous Drug Act 2000 was amended to decriminalise the use of cannabis for medical purposes in Mauritius and, more specifically, it provides clarity on how medical cannabis will be regulated and dispensed.

It is important to note that the amendments refer to the use and import of medical cannabis but does not cater for cultivation of cannabis.

Legislation

The Dangerous Drugs Act, 1986 (as amended).

The 2000 Dangerous Drugs Act sanctions drug use with maximum 2 years of imprisonment and/or a fine.
